The Tweed Coast Self-Drive: Beaches, Food and Hidden Gems

A self-guided drive along the Tweed coast in northern NSW: the beaches, Wollumbin, the food trails and the hinterland, narrated as you go.

The Tweed Coast Self-Drive: Beaches, Food and Hidden Gems

Right up on the Queensland border, the Tweed is where the subtropics start. Behind the beaches rises Wollumbin (Mount Warning), and between the two sit green hinterland roads, farm gates and one of the best little food scenes on the coast. QuokkaGuide has four tours here; explore them all on the Tweed hub.

The beaches: Kingscliff, Cabarita and Fingal Head

The Tweed coast is a run of long, uncrowded beaches. Kingscliff has the cafes, Cabarita has the point break, and Fingal Head has a little lighthouse and a causeway of basalt columns. Follow the Tweed Coast Discovery Drive.

Wollumbin (Mount Warning) and the hinterland

Behind the coast, the hinterland climbs into rainforest and farmland around Murwillumbah, all of it under the peak of Wollumbin, the first place on the mainland to catch the sunrise.

Where the river meets the sea: Tweed Heads

At the northern end the Tweed River meets the ocean at Point Danger, right on the border. It is the busiest corner of an otherwise quiet coast.

Food, markets and second-hand treasure

The Tweed earns its own food trail. Two QuokkaGuide tours lean into it: A Taste of the Tweed and The Tweed, Made for the Feed, plus a Second-Hand Safari for the op-shop hunters.

Why self-guided beats a coach tour

A coach tour tells you when to get back on the bus. A self-guided audio tour does the opposite: you choose when to leave, how long to linger at a lookout, and which detour is worth it. The narration hands you the history and the local detail you would otherwise miss, but the day stays yours.

How QuokkaGuide audio tours work

Pick a tour, download it before you leave, and start driving. The app follows your location and plays each piece of audio as you arrive, so you never read a map at the wheel. Everything works offline, which matters on the stretches where the signal drops out.
